All, thank you again for opening this and perusing it on a daily basis. I continue to be astonished by the talent of the individuals who subscribe to 2PML. I do my damnedest to keep it focused and worth your while. Some days are slower than others, today was one of those days. In addition, there was a front end malfunction that negatively impacted the letter's aesthetic and ease of use. It would have made you unsubscribe had I sent it at 2 PM EST, so 8 PM EST it is! I hope that this letter is useful to you. - @web
ECOMMERCE: Instagram currently allows brands to promote products using an ad format, but the new shopping feature can be applied to regular posts as well. It’s partnering up with 20 retail brands like J.Crew, Kate Spade, and Warby Parker at launch, and plans to expand globally. No word on whether that means non-retailers like celebrities and influencers will be able to take advantage of the feature, which opens up big monetization potentials for Instagram.
MEDIA: Hype's cofounders say beta testers have used the app to host daily news shows and review video games. Kroll and Yusupov have been working on the app for the past year with a small team in New York City. "This isn’t just about porting TV genres to mobile video," Liew, who led Hype's first round of funding, said in a Medium post on Wednesday. "It is about creating new genres, native to the mobile native format and to the mobile-native audience."
ECOMMERCE: LVMH-owned apparel label Thomas Pink is establishing a branded community around rugby, engaging with consumers over a shared love of the sport. To draw attention to its position as the official outfitter of the British & Irish Lions, Thomas Pink has launched The Pink Lion Rugby Club, with membership including chances to attend events, news and information about promotions. For Thomas Pink, this club may attract a wider audience of enthusiasts who may turn to its hub for exclusive content and access.
BRAND: Budweiser -- which re-aired a classic Harry Caray ad last night to celebrate the Cubs World Series win -- created a video overnight imagining how the legendary broadcaster might have called last night's game. Budweiser worked with the Caray family estate to obtain recordings of Mr. Caray's voice and then layed it over footage of last night's win and ruckus celebrations in Chicago. The agency behind the ad is VaynerMedia.
TECH FASHION: It’s going to sound absolutely crazy, but for anyone who has a speaking role — the principals and the guest stars — we have to hand-make everything. It’s by virtue of necessity! You’ve got to think that if folks were paying this much money to come to the park, they’d want their clothing to be bespoke. And at the same time, we wanted our clothes to be character-specific. We actually had to dye every single piece, too. You want things to look beautiful in the frame, so you have to control the color.
ECOMMERCE: If you own or work for an eCommerce website (small or large), chances are that a significant percentage of your prospective customers are getting to your checkout page and then leaving in droves. Let’s take a look at the art of reducing checkout abandonment and how you can fix it — starting today. Statistics on the percentage of abandoned shopping carts are staggering — from over 75% according to SalesCycle, to a low of around 60% according to MarketingSherpa.
BRAND: The stock closed down 6.3% after Mr. Rorsted said Adidas wouldn’t repeat 2016’s growth next year, with management’s focus on improving operating profitability. In the Reebok revamp, Mr. Rorsted said Rebook outlets would be among regional stores Adidas plans to sell in the U.S. even as it plans to open a new Reebok headquarters in Boston. “It is now time to get back to the gym and redouble our efforts,” he said.
ECOMMERCE: Instacart workers are earning a lot less money after changes to the company’s pay structure — changes CEO Apoorva Mehta told BuzzFeed News are necessary for the company’s continued growth, but that hundreds of vocal Instacart shoppers say are threatening their livelihoods. According to a Buzzfeed News analysis of 15 workers’ pay stubs, shifts that once earned shoppers $100 or more in 4 to 8 hours have dropped closer to $60 to $80 for similar shifts.Â
MEDIA: Facebook’s transformation from a free social-networking website for desktop web browsers into an ecosystem of mobile apps is one of the most remarkable business and technology success stories of the last century. And yet, Facebook wants more. Facebook is a machine for capturing attention, but it has not managed to capture some key categories of the attention market, most notably “Live.”
ANDY DUNN: I’ve also seen him turn into a great entrepreneur and one of the few cheerleaders the ecommerce world had… well, before Jet and Dollar Shave Club’s massive acquisitions suddenly made the category look hot again. He’s funded some 15 other ecommerce companies, advises even more, and serves on the board of three others. For better or worse, Dunn is all in on Bonobos and ecommerce generally.Â
